"Me and my kids wear our coats in our apartment when it gets too cold. We don't always get heat. I need the coat drive to get my boys new coats every year" [Tamara-client]
Winter is harsh in New Jersey, but nowhere more so than Newark's West Ward where many families live on the street, in abandoned buildings and ramshackle apartments often without heat. For families living on the edge, winter heightens the feeling of desperation in their already precarious lives. In an attempt to keep warm, our clients often stuff newspapers in their clothing and use garbage bags as coats.
Franciscan Charities, a registered 501(c)(3) organization, has been serving Newark's poor for ten years by serving hot lunches five days a week, distributing thousands of bags of groceries, training clients for reentry into the workplace, and providing literacy programs and summer camps for children and teens.
The Franciscan Charities' Annual Coat Drive occurs at the end of each November. Last year over 600 coats were distributed along with 1000's of hats, gloves, scarves, socks, blankets, and fleeces.
Help us continue this important tradition and ensure that families stay warm this winter by Donating to our Coat Drive.
Temperatures are dropping, but the need is rising.
