Update #1

"The Roof of Love" is finished. Now the children have shade from the sum (the roof includes upgraded material to reduce heat radiating downward), and they will have shelter in the monsoon rains. We are adding lights and electrical outlets (with GFCI for safety). So the space can be used at night and for performances.

Wanwisa and I are spending more and more time with the kids. They are frankly amazing. They have so little but don't seem to care. The community is very supportive and happy. I see the older kids taking good care of the younger kids. This evening they were dancing to Thai music (Morlam) and having a great time.

More Info

Hi, Wanwisa and Lloyd Here. Wanwisa discovered this orphanage, Baan Louk Rak, in Khon Kaen Thailand about 7 years ago. The founder, Khun Por, and his late wife found five young children left in a park 25 years ago. They took the children home and took care of them as their own. Over time, more and more orphaned children found their way into their home. They started the non-profit organization "Child Help Foundation" to help them care of the children. Since they needed more space, they raised money to buy land and they moved to their current location 20 years ago. Over the years they have raised the children until they are adults and can make their own way in society. But Baan Louk Rak is forever their home and Khon Por is always their father!

Today there are 43 children at Baan Louk Rak, ranging from 4 months to over 18 years old. The eldest, Nam Pueng, is an adult now but works at Baan Louk Rak to take care of the younger children. The children receive an age appropriate education through volunteer teachers in the community. One of the areas in which they learn is a wooden platform under the trees. It has no roof, so is very hot in the sun, or wet in the rain. We are committed to building a simple roof over this platform to provide shelter for the children while they learn and participate in activities. This will allow the children to focus on their learning and be of great benefit to them.

Because of the need (it is rainy season now), we have personally advanced the money needed to build this roof. The work has already started and will be completed quickly. We are seeking contributions to this effort so that we can devote more of our money to the orphanage in the future. We are committed to this organization and plan to volunteer our time to teach and particularly mentor the children. Wanwisa and I would really appreciate any help you would like to give this effort. We know that this is a really good cause and worthy of your consideration. Thank you so much for reading this story.
