Jacksonville is facing many issues in education. These are not solely rooted in what is commonly called the “achievement gap” but more so in an “opportunities gap." Across the country, scholar retreats have been developed to offer students a chance to develop their leadership skills and accelerate student achievement.

These programs target college-bound students and aim to provide these students with experiences and knowledge to be leaders in their schools, communities, and beyond; ultimately equipping them and their resumes to be competitive in today’s society.

Unfortunately, most of these programs are expensive and offer few merit- and need-based scholarships so that all students might have access to these retreats.

In order to generate sustainable transformational change in Duval, we must focus our energy on building strong student leaders. They must be equipped with conviction, sense of purpose, and the leadership skills to continue to add to the education reform movement.

This May 2014, 100 middle school students from Duval County Public Schools will assemble for an all-day leadership development conference. Students will attend sessions that foster a sense of community pride, urgency, and self-worth in order to facilitate their personal leadership journeys.

B.O.L.D City Summit aims to provide all students in Jacksonville, Florida with an equitable and holistic education so that they can be competitive in today’s society when applying to college and beyond. In order to supplement and accelerate their education we aim to provide a purposeful leadership retreat where students will receive rigorous instruction, leadership development, and valuable life experience in order to bring our community closer to “one day.”
