LIFT EVERY VOICE: Self Expression at Gospel Village

LIFT EVERY VOICE: Self Expression at Gospel Village

From Trevor Crest

I have the honor of creating a mural with 180 youth in Akwa Ibom, Nigeria in their home of Gospel Village. I'll partner with AYAYA this May on their 7th trip to West Africa and I need your help in making this a reality!

More Info

I have a opportunity to visit Africa in order to teach and create art with children. THE dream realized.

I also get to work with one of my oldest friends and fellow Black entrepreneur, Andima Umoren, who is the Executive Director of AYAYA.

AYAYA is a non profit whose mission is to uplift underprivileged children of the Africa continent by empowering youth of the diaspora to engage in community service, culture immersion, and innovation in Africa.

Since 2013 AYAYA has:

  • Served 5,544 kids
  • Worked with 12 orphanages, hospitals, and schools in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria
  • Provided school supplies, toiletry items, diapers, food, clothing, toys, and medical supplies
  • Conducted a drone workshop for a primary school in Nsit Ubium, Akwa Ibom, Nigeria.
  • In 2017, were a major donor for a Special Olympics for the youth at St. Louise's Handicap Center and School in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom, Nigeria

Gospel village itself is an self-sustained campus style orphanage and community, boasting everything from a school to a chapel and even a skill center. It is home to over 180 children, ranging from infants to young adults.

Empowerment and self expression are rooted in this project. This is not a service trip to provide something the students do not have, but instead an opportunity to provide professional art techniques in order to amplify the creative voices they already have within.

The mural will be designed in conjunction with the students and local artist, Francis Onuk. It will live in their home, so it should be something they want to look at everyday. And they will be apart of the mural! Besides actually working to create the mural, their personal passion and dreams will be visually expressed throughout the large image.

Personally, I'm still very nervous because I want to provide the best possible service to the children. I know my years of teaching art in San Diego and Brooklyn will kick in, but I am blessed and overjoyed at the opportunity and I hope you all will help me make this possible!
