Update #6

Even in the midst of the crazy days without power and water, and the first smoky fire day, the scout/meeting happened. It was really lovely to see the energy and professionalism and, well, weirdness and laughter in the room(s). Also, Rando is now completely exhausted from all the work he did. Thank you, Strong Eye Shorts team. Shoot is scheduled for November, but we still need your help getting there. Thanks in advance!

Next up: photos from our first rehearsal. Stay tuned!

More Info

The short film "Apotheosis" is Strong Eye Shorts' maiden voyage into creating short films in the Sacramento area.

The Why -

"Apotheosis" is a film that came about when Chris Smith heard that one of his favorite teachers from way back in the day had always wanted to be in a film.  Originally a short story for his "Beggar's Belief" science fiction series, the concept became easily translated into a short film because, well, he couldn't see the main character as anyone but Pamela Downs.  She's taught and guided so many young and aging people, it'd be great to see her on the silver screen!

The Story -

"Apotheosis" is thematically about the purpose of life...and in the afterlife.  The story revolves around Mora Kazan's 900th birthday in a digital afterlife.  She was an aspiring writer in life and spent her years in the digital afterlife writing everything she had wanted to in life.  Until recently, she'd always had another idea for the next project.  After she finished her last book, for the first time, she's been empty of ideas.  Seeing the end of her purpose in this man-made heaven of sorts, she's decided what to do next but before she can go she has to convince the recently deceased, reward-for-life-seeking Noah to take up the pen.  She must convince him that the only way to survive the afterlife is to have a purpose, simply seeing the extra years as a way to let loose and party absolutely leads to the same thing it does in life; dissatisfaction.

Strong Eye Shorts -

Strong Eye Shorts comes from the brain child of Chris Smith, Carianne Wrona, Elise Hodge and others who see the same problem with making independent film that has always existed: resources.  There are writers who have scripts but no crew or funding, crew members who have no script to shoot, actors who don't have lines, and so on.  Strong Eye Shorts wants to bring those people together in the Sacramento area and focus on the second hurdle to creating films: finances.  Strong Eye Shorts wants to help writers complete their short film scripts, budget and schedule those scripts, create fundraising campaigns and then produce the short films.  The team already includes producers, writers, directors, wardrobe designers, production designers, directors of photography, editors, make up artists and actors...and we're always growing.  By using what Chris calls "Big Table Thinking", Strong Eye Shorts wants to expand the amount of art created by working with as many filmmakers as are willing to help and asking the world around them to help donate small amounts to make varied, inventive short films around Sacramento, CA.  No one creates film alone and the more the merrier.

Update #5

Making great progress, y'all! First production meeting is on the schedule, and after that you'll get to meet our team, up close. In the meanwhile, prop sourcing has started for the brooch/Nexus device that our actors will wear, and that some of you will get as a limited edition prop. Our incredible Production Designer, one-woman force, Ashley Cook, already has ideas about assembly (and the whole team may be a part of that!) Of course you'll see the finished product, but don't you already kinda want one...? :-)

Update #4

More new donors! Just wanted to clarify for those who are choosing from digital images (thanks, The Nascent Normal Photography and Design) to be emailed or, in upper donor levels, sent in print: there are multiple mages we currently have to choose from, most are found at the slideshow at the top of the page. There maaaay be other options to choose from if these don't tickle your fancy, but we're pretty sure they will. So, here's a crazy Annabelle face, and there are certainly more where that came from.

Update #3

More good news for our progress: we came home from a great meeting at the Capital Film Arts Alliance (Apotheosis was represented by four team members, and the meeting headed by one of our first donors) and found that we had a new generous donation. We're making great progress toward our goal. Today we shoot the second video that will be featured here, explaining the story of the film and how our offered perks tie in. We've also created a press release at the behest of the El Dorado County Film Commissioner, and new business cards are in the mail. Do we rest? Definitely not yet!

Update #1

Hi all! We're up to three donors already and it's time to start delivering on perks. For those of you who donate at the "choose a photo levels," all available photos are featured in the embed at the top, except this most special one of Frosty with her baby, framed by the beauty of the ranch where Mora chooses to end her afterlife. There may be more on offer as support continues. Look for the Afterlife Prediction updates later today for the three donors who so far are receiving them.
