About the AVMA

The American Veterinary Medical Association represents more than 89,000 member veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia, and uniformed services. 

In order to ensure each of our member veterinarian's voices are heard, I'll need to travel throughout the U.S. and meet with AVMA members in our Local, State and Allied veterinary organizations.  

How has Dr. Demaree served our profession?

Dr. Angela Jo Demaree is a Major in the United States Army Reserves and deployed in 2012 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  She currently serves on the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine's Alumni Board, the American Veterinary Medical Association's (AVMA) State Advocacy Committee and the American Association of Equine Practitioner’s (AAEP) Welfare and Public Policy Advisory Council.

Dr. Demaree was a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives for Indiana’s 5 District in 2016 and previously worked for the Indiana Horse Racing Commission as their Equine Medical Director overseeing the equine drug testing program at the two Indiana horse racetracks. Additional responsibilities and duties included working with Purdue University on research initiatives and managing equine health emergencies.  Dr. Demaree presented an original research abstract in coordination with Purdue University and the Indiana Horse Racing Commission at the International Conference on Equine Exercise Physiology in 2014.

Prior to joining the Indiana Horse Racing Commission, Dr. Demaree worked for the AVMA as an assistant director in the Governmental Relations Division. She was also an associate in a companion animal practice, and completed a surgical internship at an equine sports medicine and surgery practice.

 Dr. Demaree is originally from Merrillville, Ind., received her DVM degree from Purdue University in 2002 and enjoys riding her off-track Thoroughbred, Tommy, in her spare time.

Why am I qualified?

I believe that as veterinarians, we are all trusted leaders in our communities and our profession. As an Assistant Director for the AVMA's Governmental Relations Division, I had a unique opportunity to see first hand how our councils, committees, House of Delegates and the Board of Directors interacted and how our volunteer members ideas worked through the process to become policy.   

During this experience I was also on the front lines in Washington, DC ensuring our law makers heard our collective voice. Advocacy has been and continues to be the #1 concern of our members and ensuring we are effective advocates for the profession and small business owners will remain a top priority for me as your 2018 President-Elect.  

How much does campaigning cost?

Did you know, that on average, candidates spend $6,000 to nearly $10,000 on travel expenses and printed materials necessary for a successful campaign? 

This cost often precludes veterinarians in the middle of our careers from participating in organized veterinary medicine and from seeking elected office.  

With your support, we can encourage more veterinarians to participate and stay involved with organized veterinary medicine at all stages of their careers.
