I'm fundraising in support of the daughter of a dear family friend in Sierra Leone whose fascinating story of hope and strength need to be told. Aminatu is 5 months old, and at 1 month old, her family started to see signs that something was wrong. Aminatu was not sleeping as babies should, and she began to develop signs of what we now know to be Hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is the buildup of fluid in the cavities (ventricles) deep within the brain. The excess fluid increases the size of the ventricles and puts pressure on the brain, and this causes the head of the infant to become enlarged. Aminatu has undergone numerous surgeries, but due to the limited resources at both the hospital of care, including the lack of a controlled laboratory for testing CSF samples, as well as the family's own limited resources, they are unable to provide the kind of treatment that any child outside of Africa could receive.
This fundraiser will help pay for transport of samples to international laboratories for testing for infection to determine the proper antibiotics to fight the infections, as well as pay for potential transport of the child to better equipped facilities. In addition, the family has exhausted its resources in helping the child, and your support will ensure that the family can continue to eat and live while providing care for Aminatu.
