From Amanda Abrahams

Recently completed my 1st build with HFH in Portugal. It was such an amazing experience - I look forward to joining the team in Honduras. It's rewarding: the work, people & places.

About Me

On my way to the first build, I was dubious about whether I would do this again. On the build, I met people from all walks of life, countries of origin and ages. Even more amazing was the number of times most of them had volunteered to be part of this week-long experience. It wasn't long before I knew - that not only would I do this again - but also encourage others too. I learned that "It takes a village" has far more meaning than just helping the family in providing housing. What many of us take for granted. I saw the ripple effect for the family and the generations to come - which will be felt forever. Please support me in reaching my goal to fundraise for this event, and if you will take a moment to look at the site and find a date to volunteer yourself - it would be a life-changing experience. See you on a build.

More Info

Honduras is one of the poorest and least developed countries in Latin America, and nearly two-thirds of Hondurans live in poverty. Before 1998, Honduras had shown moderate economic growth as a result of government reforms. But in that year Hurricane Mitch inflicted $3 billion in damage on the country, and Honduras’ economy is still recovering. The agriculture sector, responsible for most exports, was hurt the most.

Since its founding in 1988, Habitat for Humanity Honduras has built more than 10,000 houses, providing simple, decent and affordable shelter for more than 35,000 Hondurans in need of earthquake-resistant houses made with concrete floors, block walls and corrugated zinc roofs.

Global Village is Habitat for Humanity’s international volunteer program. Teams travel to over 40 countries to work alongside communities, build housing solutions, and experience local culture. Our goal is to change the lives of the people we serve, as well as the lives of the volunteers.

About Habitat for Humanity International

Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in more than 1,300 communities throughout the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.
