I'm raising money to create affordable housing in Eastern NC. Our area has seen a spike in housing costs since Hurricane Florence. Most rentals are filled, and rates significantly increased.
I have lived in New Bern, NC all my life. In that time I have never seen the housing crisis that has ensued since Hurricane Florence devestated our beautiful little town. With scores of people losing their homes to the flooding and hurricane damage, the rental market here exploded. Before Florence a family could find a 3 bedroom, 2 bath house or trailer for $600-$800 a month depending on location. Now families struggle to find a one room apartment for those rates. As a father of three and husband I have often worked multiple jobs to provide for my family. I understand the struggle that many families are going through to survive these days. Add the unemployment and other factors as result of COVID-19 and it's easy to see the dire situation many are facing. As a frontline healthcare worker I see first-hand the impact that COVID is having locally. Thus I have developed a solution to help.
I have acquired property in the countryside about 10 minutes from Downtown New Bern. The property sits at an higher elevation than many of the low lying areas, and did not flood during the record flood levels of Florence. The property already has Water, Electric, and Septic in place. My plan is to construct tiny homes on the property. With the existing utilities I can sustain three tiny homes. The plan for each tiny house is to make them functional, and efficient. Each with their own full bathroom and kitchen. Appliances will all be energy star, HVAC will be high efficiency mini split systems, and water heating will be hybrid solar/on demand. Highest R value insulation and windows/doors available will be used. All construction materials will be sourced locally to support our small businesses. These homes will be highly efficient this having little energy usage in combination with water saving fixtures will result in very affordable utilities costs for the occupants. I believe affordable housing is needed son in our area, and these can be built swiftly. Giving families and fellow citizens of our little town an affordable, quiet place to live.
