Our hearts go out to all those impacted by Harvey; recovery where feasible will take significant time and investment and many have lost what cannot be repaired. It is critical to capture this moment as we work on recovery efforts and “start right to end right” – building in resilience as we re-build our communities.
The Association for Learning Environments and its Southern Region membership has convened a Harvey Action Task Force to bring our members’ knowledge and expertise to those in the coastal areas devastated by the storm and its aftermath. The task force is building on the valuable lessons experienced by our Katrina / Rita disaster response team and has developed a Best Practices for Reacting to a Disaster guide sheet for immediate distribution. “No one is immune. Hurricane and earthquake-prone cities across the nation are closely watching the events in Texas for “lessons learned” in emergency preparation, management and recovery efforts,” noted Chris Pellegrin, CSRS Inc., who led the Katrina/Rita recovery team.
