Mom was born in Coney Island on June 9, 1932, and raised in the Fort Greene projects. She attended Prospect Heights High, then a competitive specialized high school, where she first began studying fashion design before being admitted to FIT on full scholarship. She was a tough Jewish Brooklyn girl through and through. Her first boss, at Brooks Costumes in New York, told her she should lose the Brooklyn accent if she wanted to succeed. She never lost it (even when she spoke French).
Still, she went on to open a successful clothing store in Los Angeles, the Pleasure Dome, and to travel the world, bringing us girls with her. She was larger than life, hilarious, fun, and brave. She laughed until the very end. We miss her terribly.
The Prospect Park Alliance chooses the tree species and where to plant it based on the needs of the park. They include a planting ceremony for loved ones as well as provide a personalized temporary sign for up to two years. Mom would love being a tree that grows in Brooklyn and having a place for all to visit her. A Tree for Anita will be planted in spring 2023, and as soon as we have an exact date, we will let everyone know, so you can come memorialize Mom’s amazing life with us. —Gabrielle & Jocelyne
