A Reason to Smile

A Reason to Smile

From Patrick McGaughey

I'm a young single father of two wonderful and beautiful teenagers. My son; however, has bad crowding among his teeth. Our insurance has denied the care he needs based on a point system.

After multiple evaluations and attempts to get my son care for the crowding among his teeth we have again been denied based on a point system. They're asking $4,790.00 total for care. I've set a goal just above that at $5,000.00 to help pay for some transportation expenses (I do not have a car).

I'm outraged, anxious, depressed, curious and hopeful about this situation. My son's self esteem has started to plummet--he hides and buries face when we try to take photos or videos of him. I think it's unbearable and unfair for any child to feel shame about their smile because they aren't worth enough points, and I'd do anything for him so that's why I'm here.

I want my son to have a reason to smile. I know he is tormented by this and kids are so mean to him. I believe we have an outstanding little family that deserves some help. I am low income and I cannot save enough money for these expenses--I keep food on the table, a roof over our head and the bills paid--but I don't have enough left over to save for this.
