2nd AND 3rd Eye Surgery

2nd AND 3rd Eye Surgery

From John Saboe

Thanks to everyone who donated to my first crowdfunder which covered most of my medical expenses for my initial retinal detachment surgery in Taiwan. This will help cover expenses for my 2nd and 3rd eye surgeries.

Update #2

Thanks so much Russ Byth for your donation!!! This is where I waited today before my eye check up with Dr. Chan. Fortunately the number system at the hospitals helps you figure out how long your wait will be so you don't have to sit in the hospital. With all of my appointments this year I've become an expert at determining my wait time. Everything is looking good so far but I will still need one more surgery to remove the cataract in my eye from a result of the surgery, (normal), and the silicone oil used in about 3 months or so. Thanks again for the well wishes and donations!

More Info

I'm so appreciative of all of the support and well wishes over the last 5 months as I come to what i"m hoping is the final stage to recovering the vision fully in my left eye. This latest surgery, a one hour operation, is necessary to remove the silicone oil that was used after the surgeon removed the vitreous gel in my left eye so as to reattach my retina. After the retina was reattached to the wall, it's almost like wallpaper, silicone oil was placed in the eye to hold everything in place. Now that the retina appears to be healed and attached, the oil will be removed and replaced with a saline solution. Then I should start to see normally again in my left eye, to what degree I'm still not sure but I'm very hopeful I will have full vision again. Through this experience I've certainly appreciated how precious having eye sight is, coming so close to losing the vision in my left eye. I've also made a point to remind people to get an eye exam at least once a year, especially if you're like me and suffer from myopia, or near-sightedness. I'm very grateful to my doctor and the medical staff here in Taipei, Taiwan. In doing research on the subject of retinal detachment, I found out that Taiwan has the highest incidence in the world, having a population with the highest per capita of people who suffer from myopia. They also seem to have the most knowledge of experience, awareness, and treatment. While I was at a follow up appointment for my left eye my doctor noticed a break in the retina of my left eye and was able to immediately treat in the office with a laser procedure, saving me from having another retinal detachment.

*UPDATE* As a result of the initial surgery and placement of silicone oil in my left eye I have a cataract now, a normal complication, and will need cataract surgery in the next couple of months.
