I have the pleasure of serving the Project C.U.R.E. Young Professionals board, dedicated to supporting the overall mission of Project C.U.R.E. The organization was founded in 1987 to bring supplies, equipment, and support to underserved communities and health centers across the globe. Currently, Project C.U.R.E. has a presence in 120 countries. In 2011 alone, the organization delivered $42 million worth of medical equipment, provided 260,000 pieces of biomedical equipment, and conducted six C.U.R.E. clinics that provided diagnosis, treatment, and care for an estimated 4,000 men, women, and children in Ghana, Nicaragua, Peru, and Tanzania.
The Young Professionals Board has committed to raising $27,000 in 2013, enough to send one shipping container full of supplies to a needy country abroad as well as fund a travel scholarship for a medical professional. As it turns out, I have also committed to being a faster, fitter racer in 2013. Given that, and in honor of the Young Professional Board's goasl, I have committed to completing 27,000 ft. of climbing on my bike between April 20th and May 19th. I ask a donation of 1 cent for every 10 feet of climbing I will complete, or a total of $27.
What does 27,000 ft. look like? It is just 2,000 ft. shy of the total elevation of Everest, or 4,000 ft. higher than Aconcagua (the highest mountain in the Americas). For Colorado people, it is riding from my house to the top of Lookout Mountain in Golden 8 times (about 400 miles). In short, it looks like a lot of time spent pedalling uphill.
More importantly, what does $27 look like? It looks like a Kit for Kids, which includes hygiene and a basic medical chest for a child in the developing world. It looks like a contribution to a C.U.R.E. kit, which brings 48 lbs. of prepackaged medical supplies to clinics across the globe, each kit impacting at least 300 lives.
