Early Childhood Literacy

Early literacy encompasses all of a child’s experiences with conversation, stories (oral and written), books, and print.

Did you know that statistics show that children not reading on grade level by the 3rd grade are 4 times more likely to drop out of high school? Creating a steady stream of new, age-appropriate books has been shown to nearly triple interest in reading within months!

Carver-Lyon Elementary School

According to  2018 SCREADY results, at Carver-Lyon Elementary School in Columbia, SC, only 16 percent of 3rd graders are reading on grade level. Striving to help students develop the skills they need to succeed, Carver-Lyon's Language Immersion Program gives students a chance to learn either Spanish or Mandarin at a critical age for development. Your gift helps make all this possible!

How Your Donation Helps

In partnership with Usborne Books & More's Literacy for a Lifetime Grant Matching Program, 50% of all funds collected will be matched and used to purchase additional books for the school library.

My Why

Remembering how much my love of reading shaped my childhood, I decided to launch this project in partnership with the Columbia Office of the Mayor, Carolina Service Council, and Dream Outside the Box to help revitalize the school library at Carver-Lyon and get kids excited about reading again. I hope that kids will find the same joy in reading that I did when I was the same age.
