In honor of Pride month, XO SarCar is establishing the 10-6 fund to help assist LGBTQ+ youth who are struggling with substance abuse pay for rehabilitation services.
LGBTQ+ youth are at much higher risk of substance abuse due to the experience of stigma and discrimination related to their sexual orientation or gender identity. Studies show that members of the LGBTQ+ youth community have a 13% higher chance of using drugs and alcohol to relieve emotional pain and anxiety as opposed to heterosexual youth. People who battle with substance abuse also carry a heavy stigma. Substance abuse does not mean you are a broken or bad person. It is a disease of the body and brain. Like diabetes, cancer and heart disease, addiction is caused by a combination of behavioral, psychological, environmental and biological factors. In 2019 it was reported that 14.5 million adolescent battled an alcohol use disorder, and 1.6 million adolescents in the United States required treatment for substance abuse. Rehabilitation services in the United States are very expensive and are typically not fully covered by insurance. The mission of the 10-6 fund is to provide funds to assist LGBTQ+ youth in paying for rehabilitation services. A percentage of all products sold from the new Summer 2021 line, and all purchases from the month of June will go to the 10-6 fund. You are loved, seen, and valued. The world is a better place because you are in it.
