A final Thank You ...
Thank You to everyone who has supported this wildly successful Ten Thousand Chestnut Challenge! Your generosity is tremendously appreciated by us all, and we are humbled by the sheer magnitude of people that joined in to donate and help spread the word.
A side note on the final tally... Our fundraising goal was $50,000 and your donations added up to $101,911 - not only is that more than double our goal, but the "1911"" amount in that total just happens to be the year that SUNY ESF was founded ...

Thanks again, and Happy Holidays!
Thank you! Our crowdfunding campaign is over, but you can still help us bring back the American chestnut tree by visiting us at www.esf.edu/chestnut to check on our progress or to make a tax-deductible charitable donation.
After 25 years of intense research, SUNY-ESF scientists have announced they are now able to grow blight-resistant American chestnut trees. This is a monumental accomplishment! The chestnut blight wiped out some 4 billion trees in the early 20th century, virtually eliminating the iconic American chestnut tree from the American forest.
Over the next five years, our goal is to grow ten thousand blight-resistant American chestnut trees to jumpstart the effort to restore the tree to its native range in North America. Take action right now and help us start off strong! By making a tax deductible contribution (federal tax ID: 15-6023443) to our project, and by sharing this challenge with your friends and colleagues, you can join our team and help us begin the challenge of actually growing ten thousand blight-resistant trees.
A very special Thank You to Andrew Gundlach and the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Foundation for your generous support of our Ten Thousand Chestnut Challenge! Your $30,000 gift has inspired our project team to reach even higher and work even harder to finish this last week of the crowdfunding campaign with huge success. We hope it will inspire others to become a partner in our efforts to restore the American chestnut. Thank you!

The American chestnut tree reigned over 200 million acres of eastern woodlands from Maine to Georgia, and from the Piedmont plateau in the Carolinas west to the Ohio Valley, until succumbing to a lethal fungus known as the chestnut blight during the first half of the 20th century. An estimated 4 billion American chestnuts, up to 1/4 of the hardwood tree population, grew within this range. Now, just a few survive. We lost a lot when we lost the American chestnut tree:
Rot-resistant lumber. Chestnut is legendary for its rot resistance and straight grain. Like redwood, chestnut needs no pressure treatment before use and leaches no toxic compounds upon weathering. It's no coincidence that chemically treated wood first appeared nearly 70 years ago, exactly the same time American chestnut populations virtually disappeared. Chemically treated wood can add up to $2,500 to the cost of building a new home. That's nearly 1 percent of the median home price in the United States!
Food for wildlife. Unlike many other timber-tree species, American chestnut trees also produce edible nuts. Flowering begins in as little as five years and, as trees mature, crops become frequent and copious. Not every tree has its own Christmas carol ingrained into the culture!
Enhancement of biodiversity. Biodiversity is an essential characteristic of a healthy forest ecosystem. Restoring the American Chestnut tree will help increase biodiversity and have a positive effect on wildlife populations. Before the blight, the chestnut could be counted on to produce a large mast crop nearly every year. This mast crop was stored by squirrels and other rodents, and consumed in large quantities by deer, bears, turkeys and many other wildlife species to sustain them for the winter.
Join us right now! Our Ten Thousand Chestnut Challenge runs from November 6 to December 5, 2014. You can help restore the American chestnut tree to its native range.
Why a crowdfunding campaign?
The restoration of the American chestnut tree needs more than financial support. It needs widespread awareness and enthusiasm for the restoration to become a reality. This brief campaign will help researchers start the challenging task of growing ten thousand trees that will be ready for planting when the regulatory agencies grant approval for their release to the general public.
In addition to funding, we need a dedicated community of people ready to plant wild-type American chestnut "mother" trees now, and to follow up in a few years by planting the blight-resistant trees next to them. Together, the two will produce the next generation of blight-resistant American chestnut trees. Make a contribution at the $100 level or greater and you will receive wild-type nuts (hand-packed with tender loving care by ESF students) to plant on your property. Nuts will be mailed out the first week in December 2014, along with information on how to properly plant them.
Crowd-funding is all about raising funds through social connections and building community. That’s what the American chestnut project needs now. You can help.
Right now, scientists at SUNY-ESF are growing the first blight-resistant American chestnut trees. Members of the ESF research team recently published three peer-reviewed papers that describe the science behind their accomplishment. Read more.
To learn more about the science of developing a blight-resistant American chestnut tree, you can watch Dr. Powell's TEDx Talk: DeExtinction, which is included in the videos above. And you can also read about the science of tissue culture & transformation and the search for blight-resistant genes at the American Chestnut Project website.
How can I get a blight-resistant tree?
To learn more about how to get on the list to receive a blight-resistant tree once they are ready to be released to the public, visit the SUNY-ESF American Chestnut Research & Restoration Project website.
We thank all of our supporters, especially the New York chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation who we worked with over the past 25 years. Thank you for your loyalty and support!

Most of your American chestnut nuts are in the mail...
We just wanted you to know that 90% of the "mother" tree nuts were mailed today, and that the remainder will be mailed early next week. Please be sure to refrigerate them as soon as you get them, and don't let them freeze. Instructions and related information are included in the mailing envelope.
Thanks again to everyone for making this campaign a huge success!

We just passed $90,000 !
This is the last week of our Ten Thousand Chestnut Challenge, and because of your generosity, our project team has been inspired to reach even higher and work even harder to finish this crowdfunding campaign off with huge success! Thank you to everyone who has supported this project.
And if you have been meaning to share news about this effort with a particular friend, colleague, business or professional organization … this is the time to do it! We appreciate your help getting the word out – we still need more partners to support the project and help plant wild-type “mother” American chestnut trees.
On this special day in philanthropy, Giving Tuesday, we want to extend a special thanks to Andrew Gundlach and the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Foundation for making a transformational contribution to this crowdfunding campaign. We know your generosity will serve to inspire others to join our Ten Thousand Chestnut Challenge. Thank You!

Thanks to You!
The $50,000 mark is now in our rear view mirror - a great accomplishment for which we are truly grateful. We will continue to work hard to raise as much money and gain as many partners as possible for this effort – the more money we can raise now, the more trees we can begin to grow…
Thank you for becoming a partner (or please join us now!). Even more partners are needed for our project - especially to plant their own wild-type “mother” American chestnut trees now. Please continue to help us spread the word about our Ten Thousand Chestnut Challenge.
Partners will stay connected. We will be working to keep all of our supporters connected and informed after this crowdfunding effort concludes on December 5th. A list server (a subscription emailing tool) is being created for everyone who contributes to this cause – your email address will automatically be included and you will receive your first update early in the New Year. We want to keep you up to date on major project accomplishments and milestones, and to know how your mother trees are doing!
Thank you again, and have a great Thanksgiving holiday!

• We have had donations from every state in the US. Well, almost every state – (come on Arkansas, Maine, Mississippi, South Dakota and Wyoming!)
• We have international donors from Brazil, Canada, Germany, The Netherlands, New Zealand (even though they don’t display on Fundly’s map) – and one from Armed Forces Pacific from an active duty service member!
• Right now, 178 supporters will be planting wild-type mother American chestnut trees across the US! Awesome!
• We currently have over 390 supporters and donors. Thanks!
• And at this point, we estimate that over 80,000 people have now seen our Ten Thousand Chestnut Challenge through social media, and know a little more about the American chestnut than they did before...
