Post Hurricane Sandy from Little Egg Harbor, NY

A letter from our director

THE VIEW FROM HERE

Hurricane Sandy changed our changed our mission from causing awareness about needs to being knee deep in the needs. We officially opened SOCCRC in October setting up a food pantry to serve a community we saw in need. This week, in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the needs are much easier to see and much harder to meet. From our house we can see at least a dozen homes that at total losses. We see boats driven through homes, roofs torn off, cars thrown around and lost. Those nameless folks, who had no home, and needed help with basic life necessities, have become our next door neighbors and in many cases those we worship with.On our own street, where all the homes remained standing, almost every home has empties its contents onto the street, waiting for public works to cart the saltwater and mud soaked belongings away. Electric has been out for four days now and we have no idea when it will be restored. Refrigerators that survived the sea surge are useless for the lack of power. Refrigerated foods are now being added to the growing heaps of hurricane debris, the frozen food will soon thaw and will also be lost.

THE NEEDS WE ARE MEETING

I ask that you consider helping the thousands in our area, many who have lost everything. SOCCRC, Southern Ocean County Community Resource Center, has joined efforts with Christ in Action and other national relief organizations to provide help now, to those whose lives have been impacted by the storm. We are currently providing shelter to those who have lost homes, hot meals, clothing, and portable shower facilities. We are working to help coordination between relief organizations and the Monmouth and Ocean County Food Bank.Your help is now needed in a very real way. In order to help those who need our help the most we need your financial support, any amount you can give will help.

OTHER WAYS TO HELP

In addition to funds, we're accepting and distributing physical donations. We need, bottled water (this is a huge need), non-perishable food products, canned goods, 5 gal gas cans-plastic, diesel fuel, generators, disposable diapers in all children sizes, Similac, baby food, gently used winter cloths, blankets, tarps, hand soap, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, tooth brushes, all toiletries, shaving cream razors, rubber gloves, large contractor type trash bags.
