Why I'm Running

My friend Jordan created the Facebook page Run For What, challenging other runners to ask themselves why they are running and to set goals to help others. I love to set personal goals and I wanted to help others, but I needed to find a social campaign to support. I'm also a big fan of the podcast Stuff You Should Know. One podcast episode from November 2010 focused on LifeStraw and the need for access to clean drinking water in developing countries. Here is the article from HSW, and here is a blog by Chuck about the podcast.

Putting these two ideas together, on January 1, 2012 I set a goal of running 1000 miles during 2012 and raising $1000 for LifeStraw. This money will buy 150 Lifestraws that can be used for one year, and one LifeStraw family that will help a family of four for three years. As a triathlete I train in the water and on land on wheels and by foot, but because the challenge came from Run for What?, I'm only counting the miles I run toward toward goal of 1000 miles.

I often run by myself, but I can't raise $1000 on my own. Please help me support LifeStraw and give people across the world access to safe drinking water. Thank you so very much!

About Me

I'm a 26 year old teacher from Iowa. I began running in 2009 and have become quite addicted. In 2011 my goal was to run a 10K, and by the end of the year I ran 3 half marathons. In 2012 I will run my first full marathon, and my long term goal is to complete an Ironman Triathlon (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run) before I turn 30.
