About Me
About the Peace Song
Read About How the Kids of Lāna’i Had Their Song Played as Part of the Dalai Lama's Visit to Hawaii!
What started as an ordinary poetry assignment by LHES fourth grade teacher Sandy Patterson turned into something much, much more. First, through the creative energy inspired by writing about peace, the poems became lyrics. Then, with the help of talented local music instructor and composer Matt Glickstein, the song, “Singing to the World” was born. The children’s passion inspired ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro to accompany them in a music video.
And this inspiring story just got better from there for the kids and small community that started it all. On Saturday and Sunday, April 14th and 15th, the video “Singing to the World,” was played at two public events featuring His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
The success of student-driven efforts like this inspire children to put their hearts into their education. And you can help make them possible at at Lana'i High and Elementary School.
In the short time they have been working on this song, teachers have noticed an improvement in our students’ writing skills, test scores and overall literacy. Please help us raise funds to put towards collaborative music and literacy projects just like this.We need your financial support today to help keep our arts and music program alive – and to create opportunities just like these for our students to succeed.
Help our students spread their message of peace today!

The LHES Foundation
Check Out the Foundation Website:
Lāna’i High & Elementary School (LHES) is comprised of approximately 540 students in grades K-12 on the small island of Lānai, Hawaii, population 2,800. The school is located in Lānai City, the only intact plantation town remaining in Hawai’i. The LHES Foundation is dedicated to increasing parental and community involvement and improving education quality, especially with arts and music, at our small island school.
We are parents, grandparents, alumni and community members who love our island and believe that its children can succeed in anything they try – if we all help. Together we can make our school better and build a brighter future for Lānai’s students.
