Affordable housing is beyond reach for many Hawaiians and, over the last 3 years, homelessness there has grown by 25 percent. In December, as part of a Habitat for Humanity team we will help construct 2 houses in Waimea.

Homelessness in Hawaii remains a reality for a considerable number of individuals and families.  The number of homeless has been increasing at a rate of 6% per year. The median house price in West Hawaii is $275,000, which is not affordable to most of the local workforce.  In the most rural areas, almost 20% of the dwellings listed by the Community Development Corporation consist of tents, yurts, lava tubes and cargo containers.

The mission of Habitat West Hawaii is to empower families and build community and hope through home ownership.  Granted affiliation with Habitat for Humanity International in 2002, our small affiliate has just completed our 10th house. We are ramping up to increase our capacity – growing from building 3-4 homes per year to building 10 or more homes every year, and providing the support services to help our families become successful homeowners.

Global Village is Habitat for Humanity’s international volunteer program. Teams travel to over 40 countries to work alongside communities, build housing solutions, and experience local culture. Our goal is to change the lives of the people we serve, as well as the lives of the volunteers.

About Habitat for Humanity International

Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in more than 1,300 communities throughout the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.
