Help us get back on our feet

Help us get back on our feet

From Rae Fotheringham

Unfortunately we were involved in a major 4 car accident. Between Ox's low paying AmeriCorps stipend, our inability to work, and my medical complications following the crash, we're low on funds to fix the aftermath.

Update #2

With all of your help, I was able to purchase a car. I received approval for a loan, but they only let me borrow a certain amount. I want to explain that I did look for a mid-size SUV. It was more expensive than a smaller car that would have been in worse condition. I don't want to be in a situation again where I don't feel safe in my car. The damage to my car and our physical injuries would have been significantly better if we were in a bigger and better conditioned car. The rate of accidents here in RI is too high for me to feel comfortable taking chances. Bills for Ubers and time spent on the bus between my two jobs, and not clocking in, was building. With this car, things feel easier. Corey didn't have to walk 45 minutes to work this morning because I could drive them at 5:45AM. I can drive home within 15 minutes from the Boys & Girls Club instead of an hour bus ride after a 12 hour day. Thank you.

More Info

On August 3rd, Ox and I were going to Newport for my birthday. We stopped to get coffee before getting on the interstate. Unfortunately, we didn't make it to Newport. We were stopped at a red light where we were involved in a four-car accident. The car was totaled, and we were both left with moderate to severe concussions. After a few more visits to the hospital, I was diagnosed with a trauma related seizure disorder. We have both been out of work for over a week.

Leading up to this, Ox has been in AmeriCorps for almost a year (almost done!) and has had to work a second job for the entirety of their service. It is low paying, long days and their savings have been demolished. Being out of work for a week is detrimental to their livelihood at this point. Not only that, but now they have to buy a new car. After a period of time out of work for health-related reasons, I was supposed to begin a job the week of the accident. The day that I would have started training was the day after I was admitted to the hospital for extensive and expensive tests.

All of this being said, we want to acknowledge that you have helped us in so many ways already. Our friends are fantastic and we don't know what we'd do without you. Aside from being further than broke right now, we are seeking for your support. No matter if that looks like donating any amount to our fundraiser, or hanging out with us (somewhere free preferably), we would love and appreciate it ten-fold.

Update #1

This past week has been the climax of all of this worry and stress. It was a hard realization to see how much more expensive cars are here than in the Midwest. I've come to terms with how damaged my physical body is finally, and how much I need physical therapy. I think I can finally comprehend how difficult this has been for Corey too. They're re-concussed now, after seizing in the shower last night. We're resilient, but we're scared.
