About Me

I am German-Syrian and when I worked with Syrian students in the last years, I was amazed by their openness and willingess to study. This is the new generation of Syria, these are the bright minds that are desperately needed to build the future! We should give those students the best support we can. We (in the Western countries) are priviledged to have unlimited access to education - so we should support those students that are less fortunate but more than eager to learn.

Jusoor (Bridges) is a network of Syrians (and friends of Syria) that aims to support the growth and development of Syria's many resources through development type projects. In the 1st year our focus has been on education- We have set up a mentorship program for students in Syria wanting to study abroad. We provided 46 grants for emergency tuition funding for students from Syria already in universities but cut off from their source of funding.

Most importantly in June 2012, Jusoor partnered with the Illinois Institute of Technology who generously provided partial scholarships for 50 students in Syria for undergraduate studies (each year the scholarship is renewed, a value of $1.2 MILLION).For the 50 partial scholarship spots, we had over 450 applications fromSyrian students, a strong reflection of the intense thirst and desire forhigher education among the Syrian youth. We have now admitted 28 students, who are all thriving and excelling in all areas of unviersity life. However, further funding is vital in order to ensure they are able to continue their studies next year.

Some of the profiles of the 28 students admitted:http://www.jusoor-sy.org/programs/invest-in-our-future-announcing-iits-first-28-syrian-scholarship-recipients/ As the IIT scholarships only covers most of the tuition, we are asking your help to cover the other costs. Other costs areabout $20,000 per student per year.Collectively and individually this group of 28 represents a remarkable set of achievements and aspirations. IIT selected students based purely on a student's individual merit, who they believed would comfortably excel in terms of their academic, professional and career aspirations. These students are passionate about returning to Syria and rebuilding. Indeed their aspirations range from wanting to find a cure for cancer to a burning desire to contribute to innovations in fields of aerospace engineering and wireless communications.
