For the past several months Aaron Michael has been very interested in helping people and animals in need. He really enjoys trips to the SPCA to bring donations and spend time with the animals.

A few months ago Aaron Michael started talking about finding people who needed a safe home and food and bringing them to our house. He was very matter of face about it. He talked about how we had plenty of room and plenty of food so we should just go get them and bring them to our house. He was very thoughtful in his conversations and we could really tell that he wanted to help. I reached out to some friends who work at homeless shelters in Newark but we decided that working the SPCA would probably be better for a 4 year old. On our first trip to the Monmouth County SPCA in Eatontown we brought towels and blankets to help keep the animals warm. We've made several other trips in the past few months to bring things that Aaron picks out while we are shopping. With our busy schedule it is easy for us to forget these things, but he always remembers to think of the cats and dogs who need some love. The volunteers recognize him now and he has such a sense of pride in the help that he's offering. It is very sweet to be helping him follow through on his desires to help.
Aaron Michael is very excited about the idea of people helping him with his next donation.

We're almost there! Aaron is so excited and you can see from this shot that he is a lover of all animals. This bird walked all over his arm and head last year on the Belmar boardwalk!
Please help him reach his goal! His actual birthday is Monday, April 4 so we only have a few days left!

Thank you all sooo much! Today was a big day! Bubbie, Nancy and Cornelia you've helped us get just about half way to the goal. Aaron is so excited about his 5th birthday and this is a big part of what he's talking about daily! It still amazes me that he initiates so many conversations about helping others. I'm thankful I have the time to help him make his thoughts more tangible with these trips to the shelter.

This week Aaron Michael and I made a trip to the monmouth county spca with case of cat food to donate. This trip was different than the last few. There were a few dogs there who were clearly in distress. One 3 year old lab mix had the saddest look in her eyes and when we started talking with her she slowly got up and came to the sniff hole and licked us. She seemed to be longing for connection. There was another dog who had just been brought in and he was standing on his tip toes, back arched, ears back and eyes as wide as could be. He was terrified! Aaron hadn't seen this much evidence of trauma in the past. We have had lots of discussion about how scary it must be for these animals. He must have said 10 times, "I want to work here when I'm old enough. I want to help these animals." He's tracking the progress of this campaign to raise money and asks everyday about it. Yesterday Aaron wanted to get something for the cats this time. We have a whole case of Friskies to donate on our next trip. If you'd like to make a physical donation instead of money, just drop it off at my house and we'll add it to our next delivery. Getting your kids involved with conversations of helping others is so rewarding. Sometimes complicated :-) given the questions they ask but so worth it. I hope you can help Aaron meet his goal.
